Michigan Advanced Practice Nurse continuing education requirements at a glance*:
Michigan nurses are required to complete 25 hours of continuing education hours that are approved by the Board during the 2 years preceding an application for renewal or relicensure. A licensee may earn 25 hours of continuing education for obtaining specialty certification or maintaining certification as a clinical nurse specialist, nurse midwife, nurse anesthetist, or nurse practitioner. No more than 12 credit hours may be earned during a 24-hour period for online or electronic media.
- NEW REQUIREMENT: A new rule was added to the Public Health Code – General Rules in 2021, making training on Implicit Bias required as a condition for initial licensure or registration as well as license or registration renewal. Renewing licensees and registrants are required to complete 1 hour of implicit bias training for each year of their license or registration cycle. However, for initial renewal after June 1, 2021, licensees will only need to have 1 hour for each year since the rule’s promulgation date of June 1, 2021.
- At least 2 of the 25 required hours must be in pain and pain symptom management.
- An applicant for license renewal who also applies for a controlled substance license, shall complete a one-time training in opioids and other controlled substances awareness as required in R 338.3135.
- Beginning with the March 31, 2018 renewal cycle and all renewal cycles thereafter, licensees must have completed a one-time training in identifying victims of human trafficking that meets the standards established in Administrative Rule 338.10105
- Beginning January 6, 2022, individuals seeking initial licensure in Michigan must have completed Human Trafficking Training prior to obtaining a nursing license. The Human Trafficking Training is a one-time training and is not part of the continuing education requirement but may be satisfied via a continuing education activity.
