Course Overview
This course delivers a focused, guideline-aligned look at asthma across six high-risk populations—children, older adults, pregnant people, individuals with obesity, workers with occupational exposures, and racially or ethnically minoritized groups. After a brief refresher on GINA (Global Initiative for Asthma)/NHLBI (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute) updates, phenotypes, diagnostics, and step-therapy principles, each module unpacks population-specific epidemiology, pathophysiology, social determinants, triggers, comorbidities, and treatment nuances, pairing medication algorithms with environmental and behavioral interventions. Interactive cases, decision checkpoints, and down-loadable tools reinforce how to tailor care plans, educate patients, and coordinate multidisciplinary follow-up, equipping clinicians to close outcome gaps across the lifespan.

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Apply the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program and the Global Initiative for Asthma guidelines for asthma management.
  • Differentiate the types of asthma seen in adults.
  • Distinguish antecedent, comorbid, and exacerbating conditions that can affect asthma care in the adult.
  • Examine the relationship between obesity and asthma.
  • Examine the adverse effect on asthma of certain medications.
  • Examine the unique considerations for providing care for the older adult with asthma.
  • Examine the unique considerations for providing care to the pregnant woman with asthma. 

About the Author/Presenter 
Dr. Judith Quaranta, PhD, RN, CPN, AE-C, FNAP, is an associate professor at the Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Binghamton University. She received her PhD from the Decker School of Nursing, and her dissertation focused on asthma management for school nurses. Dr. Quaranta’s research focus is on barriers and facilitators for asthma management and factors impacting asthma development. As a Train the Trainer for the American Lung Association’s Open Airways for Schools curriculum, she has worked collaboratively with the Broome County Health Department, the Asthma Coalition of the Southern Tier, United Health Services Hospital, and her local American Lung Association to implement this program in local schools. She has presented at multiple national conferences on the topic of asthma and self-management and has authored manuscripts for journals, including Public Health Nursing, Journal of School Nursing, Journal of Asthma and Allergy Educators, Online Journal of Rural Nursing, Journal of Family Social Work, and Journal of Interprofessional Care, in addition to authoring textbook chapters on research and community and public health.
