Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) Assessment and Treatment in a Hospital Setting
Course Overview
Often, medical professionals are tasked with evaluating and treating benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) symptoms in a hospital environment. This course will discuss the various types of BPPV using the anatomy of the vestibular system, combined with knowledge of the pathophysiology of BPPV, to treat these conditions. This includes education on how to adjust BPPV treatment per clinical setting and available equipment or if the patient has substantial comorbidities that make treatment more challenging.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Analyze the mechanism of BPPV and the physiological reflexes that occur
- Differentiate the various types of BPPV based on patient history and results from specialized testing
- Utilize testing and symptom reports for differential diagnosis of a patient with vertigo symptoms
- Assess treatment interventions for the various types of BPPV based on patient presentation and their functional and occupational limitations
- Predict adjustments for treatment approaches based on comorbidities and range-of-motion (ROM) issues that would limit standard treatment procedures
- Predict adjustments for treatment approaches per clinical setting and available equipment
