Cultural Humility in Healthcare
Course Overview
In today’s increasingly diverse society, providing equitable, respectful, and person-centered care requires more than clinical expertise; it demands a deep understanding of the cultural factors that influence health beliefs, behaviors, and outcomes. The purpose of this course is to explore the tools necessary for healthcare professionals in developing self-awareness, communication skills, and reflective practices essential for delivering truly inclusive care in a culturally humble manner.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Define cultural humility.
- Identify dimensions of diversity in the United States.
- Identify factors that can interfere in the healthcare professional/patient relationship with patients of diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Define cultural humility from the perspectives of oppression, privilege, and marginalization.
- Define the process of providing patient care with cultural humility.
- Differentiate between multicultural competency and cultural humility.
About the Author/Presenter
Shirley Aycock, DNP, RN, is a Registered Nurse who has spent the majority of her nursing career serving in a variety of leadership roles. Her leadership roles range from clinical operations within acute care facilitates to serving as Adjunct Nursing Faculty at several Universities, including the LeTourneau University and the University of Texas at Arlington, College of Nursing and Health Innovation.
She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Texas at Arlington, a Master of Science in Nursing Administration from the University of Texas at Tyler, and a Doctorate of Nursing Practice from the Rush University in Chicago, Illinois.
