Ethical Decision-Making: A Guide to Working with Aging Patients
Course Overview
Everyone has heard the word ethics, yet some may not understand how ethics applies to practice in their current work setting. This course will examine the constructs of ethics in the elderly population, using a functional, case studies–based approach. This course is taught by a practicing clinician with over 20 years of insight, with real-life examples and insight into ethical dilemmas.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Identify four key principles of bioethics.
- Recognize ethical considerations that occur in the lives of our elderly patients within each principle.
- Recognize principles of bioethics using a case study approach.
- Recall healthcare scenarios to determine appropriate actions within ethical constructs.
About the Author/Presenter
Amber Heape, CScD, CCC-SLP, FNAP, CDP, is an assistant professor and director of the Health Professions Education Track in the SLPD program at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. Dr. Heape serves on multiple volunteer committees at the state and national levels. She is a fellow of the National Academies of Practice, is a certified dementia practitioner, and teaches interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary courses related to healthcare in the geriatric population. She is also Coordinator for ASHA SIG 15 (Gerontology). Dr. Heape has a passion for clinical education and mentoring future leaders.
