Nursing Management of Sleep Disorders, 2nd Edition
Course Overview
This course is intended to assist nurses in gaining a better understanding of the pathophysiology underlying common sleep disorders prevalent in adults. They will be proficient in recognizing, diagnosing, and treating these disorders, including insomnia, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, and narcolepsy. Participants will also develop basic assessment skills to evaluate sleep disturbances, enabling early detection and intervention. By exploring evidence-based treatment modalities and interventions, nurses will be equipped to devise individualized treatment plans, fostering improved patient outcomes and overall quality of care.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Recognize the various stages and objectives of the sleep process.
- Examine prevalent physiological issues associated with inadequate sleep.
- Recognize the signs, symptoms, and causes of sleep apnea.
- Identify the diagnostic process and criteria used for identifying obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
- Identify the treatment for OSA.
- Examine the management and treatment of other common sleep disorders.
About the Author/Presenter
Robyn B. Caldwell DNP, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC
Dr. Caldwell has worked in various healthcare settings throughout her 33-year career, including nursing education, family practice, urgent care, and mental health. She has an extensive background in nursing education at community colleges and universities, with expertise in undergraduate mental health nursing, graduate clinical development, implementation, and oversight of a family nurse practitioner program. In addition, she has published and presented on topics related to nursing and mental health, as well as patient outcomes at local, state, and national venues. Dr. Caldwell practices in rural family health settings, emphasizing mental health and urgent care treatment.
