About the Course: 
This course is intended for operative and acute care nurses who work with patients undergoing surgical procedures. In this course, we will discuss the importance of reducing surgical site infections (SSIs) and how this reduction will lead to better patient health outcomes by reducing morbidity and mortality, as well as decreasing national healthcare costs. Knowledge of SSI risk, identification of existing SSIs, and prevention strategies are critical to providing safe, evidence-based, and optimal patient care. 

Learning Outcomes: 
Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to:

  • Differentiate SSI from other hospital-acquired infections. 
  • Examine the significance and incidence of SSI in the United States.
  • Compare classifications of wounds and SSIs.   
  • Identify risk factors for SSIs.
  • Examine the microbiology of SSI.  
  • Identify preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative strategies to reduce the risk of SSI.
  • Identify nursing interventions to increase patient engagement in reducing SSIs.
  • Apply strategies to implement SSI prevention interventions in the healthcare setting.
     

About the Author: 
Stephani Hunt, MSN, RN, WCC, OMS, ONC, CFCN received her master’s degree in Nursing with an education focus from Framingham State University and her Baccalaureate degree in Nursing from Northeastern University, Boston.  She is Wound Care Certified, an Ostomy Management Specialist, a Certified Foot Care Nurse, and is a Certified Orthopaedic Nurse.   Ms. Hunt was formerly a Medical-Surgical Clinical Nurse Educator and is currently working as an Inpatient Wound and Ostomy Specialist and Wound Care Coordinator in Concord, NH.  Prior to this position, she worked in both inpatient post-surgical units and an outpatient Colorectal and General Surgery clinic, in Boston, MA and Manchester, NH respectively.  She is passionate about the reduction of preventable complications and providing the best care to surgical patients throughout every aspect of their perioperative period.
