FAQs

How many CE hours do Florida RNs and LPNs need for license renewal?

Florida RNs and LPNs need 24 contact hours of continuing education every 2-year renewal cycle. Of those, 8 hours are in mandatory topics and 16 are electives. Florida APNs need 27 total hours.

What mandatory CE topics are required for Florida nurses?

Florida requires four mandatory topics each renewal: Prevention of Medical Errors (2 hrs), Florida Laws and Rules (2 hrs), Human Trafficking (2 hrs), and Recognizing Impairment in the Workplace (2 hrs, every 2nd renewal). Additionally, Domestic Violence (2 hrs) is required every 3rd renewal, and HIV/AIDS (1 hr) is a one-time requirement.

When does my Florida nursing license expire, and when are my CEUs due?

Florida RN and APN licenses expire on April 30, 2026 — that deadline is approaching fast. LPN licenses expire on July 31, 2027. All CE hours must be completed and reported to CE Broker before your expiration date. Don’t wait until the last minute, as your provider needs at least one business day to report your hours.

Does Florida use CE Broker to track my nursing CEUs?

Yes. Florida requires electronic reporting of CE completion through CE Broker. Your CE provider must report your completed hours to CE Broker within 1 business day. You can create a free CE Broker account to monitor your compliance status and verify that your hours have been reported.

Can I complete all my Florida nursing CEUs online?

Yes. Florida has no online limitations for nursing CE. All 24 required hours, including mandatory topics, can be completed through approved online CE providers. Note that online courses must include a minimum 10-question evaluation, and you must score at least 70% to receive credit.

What additional CE do Florida APNs need beyond the standard requirements?

Florida APNs need 27 total hours, which includes all the RN mandatory topics plus 3 hours of Safe and Effective Prescription of Controlled Substances each renewal. APNs registered with the DEA must also complete a one-time 8-hour MATE Act training. The APN license also expires April 30, 2026.

Do I need a specific Florida Laws and Rules course each renewal?

Yes. Florida requires a 2-hour Florida Laws and Rules course specific to nursing practice every renewal cycle. This course covers updates to the Nurse Practice Act and relevant state regulations. Make sure the course you select is current and Florida Board-approved.
