Pennsylvania RNs need 30 contact hours of continuing education every 2-year renewal cycle. Of those, 2 hours must be in Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting, and 28 hours are electives.
No. Pennsylvania LPNs only need 2 total CE hours per renewal cycle, consisting solely of the mandatory Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting course. This is significantly less than the 30 hours required for RNs and APNs. The current LPN license expiration date is June 30, 2026.
Pennsylvania RN and APN license expiration dates vary by individual — check your specific date through the Pennsylvania Department of State website. Pennsylvania LPN licenses have a fixed expiration of June 30, 2026. All required CE must be completed before your renewal date.
All Pennsylvania nurses (RN, LPN, and APN) must complete 2 hours of Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting each renewal cycle. APNs with prescriptive authority need an additional 2 hours in Pain Management, Identification of Addiction, and Practices of Prescribing/Dispensing Opioids.
Yes. Pennsylvania has no online limitations for continuing education. All required contact hours, including the mandatory Child Abuse course, can be completed through approved online CE providers.
Pennsylvania APNs need 30 total CE hours per renewal cycle, including 2 hours in Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting and 2 hours in Pain Management/Opioid Prescribing (for those with prescriptive authority). DEA-registered APNs must also complete a one-time 8-hour MATE Act training.
No roster submission is required. Pennsylvania uses an attestation system where you certify compliance at renewal. However, you must retain your CE certificates, as the Board may audit your records at any time.
