Addressing Post-Stroke Swallowing and Communication Challenges

About the Course
This course addresses the types and ranges of such deficits, to include swallowing disorders and the common post-stroke communication deficits. Content will include signs and symptoms of each type of disorder, potential treatment types determined by the speech language pathologist based on the specific prognostic factors and unique needs/abilities of the clients and tips for the client and their friends/family members. Following this course, the attendee will better understand the treatment and recovery parameters of the range of communication and swallowing deficits that may be experienced following a stroke.   

Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Differentiate possible signs and symptoms of dysphagia 
  • Compare therapeutic approaches for treatment of dysphagia 
  • Differentiate symptoms of aphasia, dysarthria, and apraxia to determine communication strategies for the interprofessional team member 
  • Contrast types of cognitive deficits and occupational limitations that might result from a stroke to specific parts of the brain 
  • Distinguish potential voice impairments that might result from a stroke 

About the Author/Presenter
Lisa Milliken MA, CCC-SLP, FNAP, CDT, RAC-CT has served as a practitioner, regional manager, vice president, consultant, compliance director and education specialist. She has lectured at the state and national levels with over 400 professional continued education courses on topics of importance to healthcare professionals. She is a certified dementia practitioner and has mentored team members across the country in senior retirement communities on clinical programming for the past 30 years.  

She is currently the owner of Milliken Healthcare Consulting, where she teaches conferences across the country, and is also Director of Research and Program Development for Regency Integrated Health Services.  

Lisa is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, where she serves as a state advocate for Medicare Policy for Texas, is president-elect for the Texas Speech-Language and Hearing Association (TSHA) and is a distinguished fellow of public policy for the National Academies of Practice. She is also a board member of the Kingwood-Humble Aggie Mom club and lives in Houston, Texas.?

  • After completion of the course, complete the final examination. A passing grade of 75% is required. Test questions link content to learning outcomes as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention.
