Functional Gains in Stroke Recovery Using Therapeutic Exercise, 2nd Edition

65

Course Overview
Resistance training and resistive exercise are often overlooked in stroke rehab, even though research has found that it plays a part in improving cognitive function in stroke survivors. Cognitive testing revealed that both resistance training and aerobic exercise contributed to improvements in cognition at 6 months. This course provides treatment techniques and exercise protocols using resistive bands for therapists involved in neurological rehabilitation to go back to their treatment environments and immediately be able to utilize these techniques. Specific exercises are introduced, including exercises for the upper extremity, lower extremity, and core stabilization techniques to increase overall function and balance. With these techniques a therapist can go back to their treatment environments and immediately be able to utilize these techniques in their daily patient care.

Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Analyze risk factors, complications and possible impairments for stroke patients.
  • Determine the first two areas that should be addressed when using a functional exercise progression.
  • Distinguish what proper positioning of patient allows.
  • Analyze the indications for elastic resistance.
  • Categorize the three key areas/levels of proprioception and functional stability.
  • Determine what is included in a vicious cycle of instability.
  • Predict how therapeutic exercise interventions can improve patients' functional abilities and participation in daily occupations following stroke.
  • Categorize the advantages and disadvantages of stabilization training.
  • Distinguish how to document services delivered for evidence-based results.
