About the Course
This intermediate-level course is intended for occupational therapy practitioners with an interest in expanding school-based practice to include positive mental health program involvement. Occupational Therapy’s Role in School-Based Positive Mental Health Initiatives will explore positive mental health as a preventative approach to the various mental health concerns and crises that are plaguing schools in a post-COVID world. Positive mental health theory and principle will be explored to establish foundational knowledge. Trends in existing school culture, guidelines, and services that impact occupational therapy’s role in positive mental health involvement will be examined to establish the need for OT involvement. Identification of advocacy and promotion opportunities to emphasize occupational therapy’s distinct contribution to positive mental health initiatives will be evaluated. Appraisal of existing programs and development of potential positive mental health programs will be applied through case study exploration. Practical strategies will be offered to improve confidence, skills, and resources for those occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) who wish to become an integral part of school positive mental health programming.

About the Author
Miranda Virone, OTD, MS, OTR/L-CTP, is the academic fieldwork coordinator and assistant professor of occupational therapy in the Occupational Therapy Programs at Carlow University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. With more than 20 years of practice experience, Dr. Virone has concentrated her research and professional scope to involve occupational therapy’s role in positive mental health initiatives within school-based practice. Recently, she launched her own consulting and coaching business, Vantage Educational Services, which was designed to promote positive mental health everywhere kids live, learn, and play. Dr. Virone holds certifications as a digital health and wellness expert, executive function coach, and certified trauma-informed practitioner. She serves as a cofacilitator for the American Occupational Therapy Association’s (AOTA) School Mental Health and Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association’s (POTA) Youth Positive Mental Health Communities of Practice. She was recently elected as the Pennsylvania Delegate #1 to the AOTA Representative Assembly. Dr. Virone currently serves as a member of the POTA School-Based and Licensure Compact Act Task Forces and the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s (PDE) Attract, Prepare, Retain (APR) Steering Committee. She presented at the 2021 POTA Conference on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of youth and occupational justice initiatives as innovative fieldwork experiences. She presented at the 2020 Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association Conference on Trauma-Informed Care in School-Based Practice and as the keynote speaker at the 2020 POTA Virtual Conference, Children and Youth Post-Conference on the use of mindfulness in school-based practices. Dr. Virone published her doctorate project on the topic of mindfulness for self-regulation among adolescents with ADHD and recently submitted a book chapter on socialization among school-aged youth.
