Mandatory:
Two hours in Ethics, Laws and Regulations governing practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, or some combination thereof. Renewals due from September 2022 through July 2024, the mandatory requirement in law and ethics will not be enforced, but this requirement will be enforced beginning with all renewals due in August 2024.

On April 29, 2022, the Board of Allied Health Professions issued regulations requiring individual licensees to complete continuing competence activities (i.e., continuing education) before renewal. The regulations do not apply to physical therapy facility licenses.  All licensees should review the new regulations available here:
https://www.mass.gov/doc/259-cmr-7-continuing-competence/download

As part of your renewal application, you must certify that you have completed all continuing competence activities required to renew your license.  If you do not so certify, the Board will not renew your license, even if you submit your renewal application, until you demonstrate compliance.

The Board will prorate the continuing competence activities required for a licensee’s first renewal that is due on or after September 1, 2022.  The schedule of continuing competence activities licensees must complete is based on a licensee’s renewal date and is available here:
https://www.mass.gov/doc/ah-board-continuing-competency-compliance-policy/download

The Board may conduct an audit to ensure compliance with continuing competence requirements, so licensees should maintain proper documentation of activities during the past two renewal cycles when the regulations were in effect.

1 Point = 1 Contact Hour
Licensed physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, occupational therapists, and occupational therapy assistants are required, as a condition of license renewal, to complete a minimum of 24 points of Board recognized activities for maintaining continuing competence during the preceding biennial renewal period.
