Course Overview

This course is intended to be used by primary care providers and practitioners as an update on the ever-changing landscape of diabetes technology, including continuous glucose monitors and insulin pumps. The course will review new updates to the technology as well as provide clinicians with a real-world case to help them feel comfortable managing insulin pump patients in primary care. 

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Explain how continuous glucose monitors function.
  • Distinguish the similarities and differences of continuous glucose monitors.
  • Define current available insulin pump technology.
  • Apply appropriate dosing strategies for patients on insulin therapy.
  • Identify functions of smart pens. 

About the Author/Presenter 

Patrick Welch, PharmD, BCACP, is an advanced clinical pharmacist practicing in family medicine. Dr. Welch completed his pharmacy school at the University of Utah College of Pharmacy and completed his Post Graduate Years 1 and 2 residencies at Intermountain Health. He currently works under collaborative practice agreements managing disease states such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), hyperlipidemia, and anticoagulation. He enjoys helping patients live their healthiest lives possible.
