Enhancing Mental Health and Preventing Burnout for Healthcare Professionals
Course Overview
The increasing prevalence of burnout and compassion fatigue among healthcare workers has become a significant concern in the medical field, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. This course will delve into the mental health of healthcare workers through discussing burnout, compassion fatigue, and moral distress in the healthcare setting. It further provides current evidenced-based therapy for appropriate and effective treatment and support of healthcare workers’ mental health. Additionally, focusing on healthcare organizations’ leadership and management can implement changes within the workplace, and the course identifies COVID-19 impacts on healthcare workers and notable statistics that highlight the increase in distress in the healthcare field.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Define healthcare burnout, compassion fatigue, and moral distress.
- Identify treatment, techniques, and prevention for mental health issues impacting healthcare professionals.
- Relate strategies healthcare leaders and managers can implement to address mental health issues in the workplace.

- Identify COVID-19 impact and statistics related to healthcare workers’ mental health.
About the Author/Presenter
Anne Horgan, LCSW, completed her bachelor’s degree at the University of Nebraska (Lincoln) with a major in psychology and minors in sociology and education. She went on to obtain her master’s degree at the University of Chicago Social Service Administration program. Anne is currently an EMDR-trained mental health therapist in the state of Oregon. She carries 15 years of experience in several areas including emergency department/crisis work, medical social work and hospital management, psychotherapy, Partial Hospital Program and Intensive Outpatient Program therapist, community mental health, and work with populations including but not limited to depressive disorders, anxiety and panic, PTSD, postpartum mental health, self-esteem/identity conflicts, psychosis, mania, adjustment issues, parenting, substance use, relationship conflicts, and loss. Anne is also a board-approved clinical supervisor and provides clinical supervision to social work and professional counselor associates toward licensure.
