Golden Hour Management for Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants

Course Overview
This course is intended for all healthcare professionals who care for extremely low birth weight infants (ELBW), infants less than <1,000 g, within the first hour of life, known as the golden hour. This course provides a focused review of critical interventions and evidence-based practices during the golden hour. Learners will explore strategies to optimize thermoregulation, respiratory support, cardiovascular stabilization, glucose control, and infection prevention. Emphasis is placed on interprofessional collaboration, anticipatory preparation, and reducing morbidity and mortality through standardized protocols.

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Define the critical physiological needs of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants during the first hour of life.
  • Identify evidence-based interventions used in the delivery room and NICU to support thermoregulation, respiratory function, and cardiovascular stability.
  • Distinguish principles of Golden Hour protocols to clinical scenarios involving ELBW infants.
  • Summarize the impact of standardized Golden Hour practices on neonatal outcomes and quality improvement measures.
  • Identify each team member’s role and integrate shared knowledge to optimize care for ELBW infants during the Golden Hour. 

About the Author/Presenter 
Allyssa Dolphin, MSN, RN, is a nurse educator and experienced NICU nurse with a clinical background in caring for high-risk neonates, including extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants. She combines bedside expertise with a passion for evidence-based education to improve neonatal outcomes and support interprofessional team development. Allyssa has developed and led trainings focused on neonatal stabilization, interprofessional collaboration, and quality improvement initiatives in the NICU, pediatric, and obstetric settings.
