Course Overview
The course provides an in-depth exploration of the risk factors contributing to hypertension and equips participants with the skills to interpret clinical findings across different stages of high blood pressure. Participants will learn to identify and recommend lifestyle changes essential for the prevention and management of hypertension. The course also covers the various classes of antihypertensive medications, their mechanisms of action, and side effect profiles, enabling healthcare professionals to make informed decisions when selecting treatment regimens tailored to individual patient needs.

Special emphasis is placed on recognizing and addressing racial, ethnic, and age-related considerations in hypertension treatment, ensuring that care is equitable and personalized. By the end of the course, participants will be proficient in applying evidence-based guidelines to develop comprehensive and effective hypertension management plans.

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Identify the various risk factors contributing to hypertension.  
  • Interpret clinical findings in relation to the different stages of high blood pressure. 
  • Analyze the lifestyle changes recommended to prevent and manage hypertension.
  • Differentiate between the classes of medications used to treat hypertension and their side effect profiles.
  • Apply drug information to choose appropriate hypertension treatment regimens based on patient factors.
  • Differentiate racial, ethnic, and age-related considerations in the treatment of hypertension.
  • Analyze the treatment of gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and hypertensive emergencies.
     

About the Author/Presenter 
Katie Blair, PharmD, RPh, is a pharmacist and freelance writer specializing in pharmacy education. She works as a consultant pharmacist in Vancouver, Washington, serving long-term care facilities in the area. She also has over 6 years of experience working as a staff pharmacist at a community pharmacy in Seattle. Katie graduated from Northeastern University in Boston in 2009 with a doctor of pharmacy degree. She has done freelance work writing and revising continuing education programs for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and nurses, and written practice questions for various pharmacy technician exams.
