Course Overview
This course offers essential mental health knowledge tailored to the care of older adults. It covers strategies for assessment, identification of risk factors, recognizing the need for intervention, and understanding common psychosocial issues such as loss, abuse, emotional distress, and functional decline experienced by this population.

Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

Summarize key theories of aging and developmental tasks, incorporating insights from the perspective of older adults.
Recall the fundamental elements of building a therapeutic relationship with older adult patients.
Demonstrate effective verbal communication techniques that strengthen interpersonal connections with older adults.
Summarize the impact of social determinants of health and common barriers to accessing care among the older adult population.
Analyze appropriate assessment strategies tailored to the unique needs of older adults.
Evaluate the biopsychosocial factors involved in the comprehensive assessment of older adults.
Summarize the experiences of crisis, loss, grief, and bereavement as they relate to aging.
Distinguish risk factors, evidence-based treatments, and pathways to recovery for older adults living with mental health conditions.

About the Author/Presenter
Mary Perry, MSN, RN, PMHNP-BC, is a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner across the lifespan and holds certification as a clinical nurse leader. Her diverse background includes medical-surgical nursing, aerospace medicine, military aeromedical evacuation, and mental health care. She earned her BSN from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2006, followed by an MSN in 2016 and a post-graduate certificate in 2020 from the University of Alabama. Mary has served as a nurse in the U.S. Air Force; worked as a contract nurse with the U.S. Navy in Okinawa, Japan; and taught as an adjunct professor at Troy University and Kennesaw State University.
