About the Course
Healthcare Professionals have a responsibility to understand the appropriate use of opioid medications, to include the risks inherent to this category of therapeutic products. Further, to fulfill requirements for biennial license renewal, all New Jersey registered professional and social workers must complete a one-contact-hour continuing education program focused on the use of prescription opioid drugs and potential alternative medications useful for the treatment and management of pain. This course addresses the risks and signs of opioid misuse, addiction, and diversion. It is critical that all healthcare professionals have an understanding of pain management and the potential risks and benefits of using opioid pain medication for its treatment. This course is intended to provide healthcare professionals engaged in practice settings that prescribe opioids with an accredited continuing education course designed to satisfy specific state of New Jersey continuing education requirements and provide an overview of the clinical use of opioids.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to: 

  • Define pain and the distinction between different types, prevalence, and consequences of pain. 
  • Provide an overview of the national and New Jersey trends in deaths and risks with prescription opioids.  
  • Explain the regulations governing the use of opioids, including the New Jersey Controlled Substance Regulation.  
  • Explain the diversion of opioid medications.  
  • Describe the role of healthcare professionals treating clients with opioid use disorder and/or addiction.   
  • Discuss the various treatment modalities for opioid addiction. 

About the Author/Presenter
Anne completed her bachelor’s degree at the University of Nebraska (Lincoln) with a major in psychology and minors in sociology and education. She went on to obtain her master’s at the University of Chicago Social Service Administration program. Anne is currently a mental health therapist and clinical manager in the state of Oregon. She carries 15 years of experience in several areas, including emergency department/crisis work, medical social work and hospital management, psychotherapy, Partial Hospital Program and Intensive Outpatient Program therapy, and community mental health. She works with people dealing with depressive disorders, anxiety and panic, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), postpartum mental health, self-esteem/identity conflicts, psychosis, mania, adjustment issues, parenting, substance use, relationship conflicts, and loss. Anne also provides clinical supervision to associates training for licensure.  

How to Receive Credit 

  • Read the entire course online or in print which requires a 1-hour commitment of time. 
  • After completion of the course, complete the final examination.  A passing grade of 75% is required. Test questions link content to learning outcomes as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention. 
  • Note to Nursing professionals: Depending on your state requirements, you will be asked to either affirm that you have completed the course, or you will be required to complete the Post-test included in the course.
  • Provide required personal information and payment information.
  • Complete the mandatory course evaluation.
  • Print your Certificate of Completion.
