About the Course  
Branching out into your own business can be a daunting task.  How do you even begin?  You have ideas and plans, but when it's time to put them on paper, you draw a blank!  It's important to have a blueprint for your practice but if you can’t write about it, how can you build it?  Your business plan helps build a solid foundation and provides you with a roadmap to collect and analyze information. It is not unusual to change or revise your vision and strategies as you put pen to paper.  This course will help clarify your ideas and develop strategies to move forward.

Upon the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Identify your motivation(s) for transitioning into your own business   
  • Organize an "information to-do" list for data collection  
  • Execute a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis to assist in completing your business plan  
  • Choose and organize an appropriate business plan

About the Author/Presenter  
Denise Dougherty, MA, CCC-SLP has been a member of the American Academy of Private Practice in Speech Pathology and Audiology (AAPPSPA) since 2005 when the practice was founded.  Since then, she has held the positions of Program Chair, Vice President, and President. In 2007, she was presented with AAPPSPA 's Honor Award for Achievements, and in 2014, AAPPSPA's Award of Excellence.  Her practice provided evaluations and therapy for children and adults and now focuses on providing therapy in the home health setting. She has co-authored Private Practice Essentials for ASHA Press with Janet Brown.  For several years, she was a member of ASHA's Health Care Economics Committee.  Currently, Denise is a board member for Anew Home Health Agency. Since 2010, she has worked in numerous cases as a forensic speech pathologist around the country.

  • After completion of the course, complete the final examination. A passing grade of 75% is required. Test questions link content to learning outcomes as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention.
