Course Overview
This continuing education course provides healthcare professionals with in-depth knowledge and evidence-based approaches for managing acute pain and injuries. The course is structured in two main sections focusing on acute injury management and pain management techniques. This course equips healthcare professionals with the latest techniques and protocols for managing acute injuries and pain. Through detailed examination of both physical and psychological aspects of pain management, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of various treatment approaches and their appropriate applications. 

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Assess the five signs of inflammation.
  • Analyze the stages of the soft tissue injury healing process and the importance of the psychological approach to pain management to improve functional outcomes. 
  • Analyze pain and various techniques and protocols for managing pain.   
  • Distinguish the four theories about pain perception and scales used to measure pain. 
  • Compare acute pain management and chronic pain management. 
  • Assess various options for pain management through pharmaceutical, manual, and stretching techniques and various modality management. 
     

About the Author/Presenter 
Dr. Catherine “Cate” Bitzer, DPT, is a dedicated physical therapist at UNC Hospitals Rehabilitation Therapies and the UNC Center for Rehabilitation Care of Chapel Hill. With a strong educational foundation combining exercise physiology from East Carolina University and a doctorate in physical therapy from Clarkson University, Dr. Bitzer has developed specialized expertise in treating children with developmental delays, neuromuscular conditions, and orthopedic challenges. Her comprehensive approach to pediatric care encompasses specialized areas including aquatic therapy, prosthetics and orthotics, and wheelchair assessments. Dr. Bitzer’s philosophy centers on creating positive therapeutic experiences that promote functional potential while celebrating each child’s achievements. She is passionate about empowering caregivers with tools and knowledge to maximize their child’s independence and success. Dr. Bitzer has also spent the past year working with Colibri Group as a content writer, developing healthcare content on various topics, including pain management, therapeutic exercise, and manual therapy techniques. Beyond her clinical work, Dr. Bitzer maintains an active lifestyle enjoying running, outdoor activities, sports, and culinary pursuits while cherishing time spent with family and friends. Her commitment to pediatric rehabilitation is evident in her patient-centered approach, where she finds joy and purpose in each child’s smile, laugh, and functional progress.
