Advanced Wound Care Concepts

About the Course:
Chronic wounds are known for their large share of healthcare cost and limiting the quality of life for many patients. Therefore, it is important for healthcare professionals to have the knowledge necessary to identify causes that limit wound healing progression, to provide the ideal environment for wound healing, and to understand the intrinsic and extrinsic variables at play. This course dives into each of these topics and expounds on how edema, malnutrition, and biochemical pathways lead to the development of chronic wounds.

Course Objectives:
  1. Recognize the physiology and biochemistry of wound healing in various phases.
  2. Identify the influence of hormones in wound healing.
  3. Identify the influence of hormones in wound healing.
  4. Recognize how malnutrition can negatively affect wound healing.
  5. Recognize common infection sources in chronic wounds.
  6. Recognize common infection sources in chronic wounds.
  7. Identify how bioactive and interactive dressings can be used to treat wounds.
  8. Recognize edema, lymphedema, and use of compression when appropriate.
About the Author:
Bettina M. Brown is a physical therapist working in Albuquerque, New Mexico, having received her master’s degree in Physical Therapy from the University of New Mexico. She earned her board certification in wound care in 2016 through the American Board of Wound Healing. She has published an article entitled Managing Cutaneous Tuberculosis: A Case Study in the Ostomy and Wound Management Journal in 2017. Latera that year, she obtained her certification through the Klose Lymphedema Certification program in 2017. She primarily works with clients that have lymphedema due to breast cancer treatment, or due to vascular insufficiencies and chronic health co-morbidities.
