How Physical Therapy Continuing Education Works
Every state requires licensed physical therapists and physical therapist assistants to complete continuing education as a condition of license renewal. These requirements are set by each state’s physical therapy licensing board, with oversight guidance from the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT).
What PT Continuing Education Covers
Physical therapy CE courses span clinical, regulatory, and professional development topics. Common categories include:
- Clinical specialties — orthopedics, neurology, pediatrics, geriatrics, cardiopulmonary, and sports rehabilitation
- Required state topics — ethics, jurisprudence, pain management, domestic violence recognition, and HIV/AIDS (requirements vary by state)
- Emerging practice areas — telehealth, dry needling, pelvic floor therapy, and concussion management

CE Formats Available
Physical therapy continuing education is offered in several formats, and many states require a mix:

How Many CEUs Do Physical Therapists Need?
CE requirements vary significantly by state. Most states require physical therapists to complete between 20 and 40 contact hours per renewal cycle (typically every 1–2 years). Physical therapist assistants generally follow the same or similar requirements. Some states mandate specific topic coverage — for example, certain states require courses in ethics, pain management, or cultural competency in addition to general CE hours.
