About the Course
This online home study continuing education course is intended to instruct the professional through a self-paced study on the APTA Code of Ethics, APTA Standards of Ethical Conduct for the Physical Therapist Assistant, the Board of Physical Therapy Policy Statement and basic theories and approaches in ethical decision making.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Define Ethics and the components of ethical standards and behavior.
- Identify the ten medical principals of ethics.
- List the five roles of the physical therapist, which are noted as the foundation of the APTA code of ethics.
- Recognize the seven core values which guide the APTA principals of professional ethics.
- Identify the components of the Realm-Individual Process-Situation (RIPS) model of ethical decision making.
- Identify the types of documentation fraud in healthcare.
- Identify the timing of a hearing and when the notice is received.
- Recognize the board vote to petition for summary suspension.
- Identify the amount of contact hours for poster sessions and lectures.
- Recognize the specified curriculum required for the Physical Therapist.
About the Author/Presenter
Lisa Milliken MA, CCC-SLP, FNAP, CDT, RAC-CT has served as a practitioner, regional manager, vice president, consultant, compliance director and education specialist. She has lectured at the state and national levels with over 400 professional continued education courses on topics of importance to healthcare professionals. She is a certified dementia practitioner and has mentored team members across the country in senior retirement communities on clinical programming for the past 30 years.
She is currently the owner of Milliken Healthcare Consulting, where she teaches conferences across the country, and is also Director of Research and Program Development for Regency Integrated Health Services.
Lisa is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, where she serves as a state advocate for Medicare Policy for Texas, is president-elect for the Texas Speech-Language and Hearing Association (TSHA) and is a distinguished fellow of public policy for the National Academies of Practice. She is also a board member of the Kingwood-Humble Aggie Mom club and lives in Houston, Texas.?
Sharon Finch O’Maley received her Bachelor of Arts in Education from the Peoples’ Bible College in 1976 and her Certification for Supervisors of ACE classrooms from the ACE Certification Institute in 1984. She also studied Spanish at the Peace Corp Language Institute in Santo Domingo.
Sharon served as a Technical Writer and Translator for Royal Tech Writers & Translators and has researched and written continuing education manuals for the medical, insurance, real estate, financial, funeral industries. She is also a medical researcher, having completed research duties on topics including deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, respiratory issues and endometriosis.
How to Receive Credit
- View the entire recording which requires a 4-hour commitment of time.
- After completion of the course, complete the final examination. A passing grade of 75% is required. Test questions link content to learning outcomes as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention.
