Interventions for Correcting Pelvic Hike: Insights for Physical Therapists (PT) & PT Assistants
Course Overview
Pelvic hike as a result of an upper or lower motor lesion can result in atypical gait patterns with compensatory strategies causing an increase in energy expenditure and the secondary impairment of musculoskeletal dysfunction. This course provides interventions to address pelvic hike in individuals with neurologic impairment that will facilitate critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and clinical decision-making strategies between clinicians.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Recognize gait abnormalities that may contribute to pelvic hike based on a written case, picture, or video
- Hypothesize the reasons that may be causing the gait abnormalities that may be contributing to pelvic hike based on a written case, picture, or video
- Select effective interventions within the scope of practice to address the impairments causing gait abnormalities that may be contributing to pelvic hike given a written case, picture, or video
- Justify an intervention to address pelvic hike based on a written case, picture, or video
- Integrate information learned that can address social determinants of health and be immediately applied to neurologic rehabilitation practice
About the Author/Presenter
Jennifaye V. Brown, PT, MSPT, PhD, NCS, CAPS has a BA in psychology (Emory University), a MS in physical therapy (University of Miami), and a PhD in exercise science (University of South Carolina). Dr. Brown has over 30 years of clinical experience focused in neurorehabilitation across the continuum of care and has presented numerous continuing education courses on adult neurologic assessment and treatment intervention for acquired brain injury, particularly stroke. Her research agenda explores the perceptions of individuals with stroke regarding their experiences with ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) fabrication, modification, and maintenance, resulting in the book, Brace Yourself: Everything You Wanted to Know About AFOs After Stroke. As an advanced credentialed clinical instructor by the Clinical Instructor Education Board and a three 10-year term board certified neurologic clinical specialist by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) of the APTA, Dr. Brown has taught at six PT and two PTA programs. She is a certified aging in place specialist and member of the APTA, Neurology Section of the APTA, SC Chapter of the APTA, and Aerobics & Fitness Association of America and a graduate of the prestigious APTA Fellowship in Education Leadership.
