Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Other Sleep Disorders, 4th Edition

37

Course Overview

This intermediate course is designed to provide healthcare professionals with current knowledge regarding obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and other sleep disorders. While many healthcare professionals have a cursory knowledge of the nature of sleep and the disorders associated with it, the depth of knowledge necessary to adequately screen and diagnose individuals with sleep disorders is not widespread across all medical disciplines. Although sleep medicine is its own specialty, all medical disciplines can screen for signs and symptoms of sleep disturbances and pathological outcomes associated with undiagnosed and untreated sleep disorders.

Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Discuss the purpose and stages of sleep.
  • Identify common sleep disorders.
  • Explain the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea.
  • Describe the process of diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea.
  • Define the diagnostic criteria for obstructive sleep apnea.
  • Describe the treatments for obstructive sleep apnea.
