This course delves into comprehensive understanding and application of post-surgical care for lower extremity orthopedic surgeries. Learners will explore the indications and fundamental procedures of the five most prevalent lower extremity orthopedic surgeries, gaining insights into each procedure's intricacies and common post-surgical precautions. The course elucidates the significant benefits of massage therapy in the treatment following surgery, outlining the advantages that aid in the recovery process. Participants will familiarize themselves with five commonly used massage techniques tailored specifically for post-lower extremity surgeries, understanding the therapeutic effects of each approach. - Describe massage techniques that can be used on specific regions of the body and their applicability to post-surgical treatment.
About the Author/Presenter
John Buchwald PT, DPT, MPH, is a highly accomplished healthcare professional with a diverse background in physical therapy and massage therapy. Since obtaining his doctorate in physical therapy in 2017, John specializes in outpatient orthopedic care, and he has been making significant contributions to the field while working at VCU Health. Prior to his doctoral studies, John pursued his academic interests by earning a asters in public health from VCU in 2010 and a postgraduate certificate in biomedical science from the same institution in 2012, solidifying his understanding of healthcare systems and scientific principles. His dedication to holistic wellness led him to become board-certified in massage therapy by NCBTMB in 2002, adding depth to his therapeutic approach. Alongside his clinical work, John has shared his expertise as a former adjunct faculty member at Brightpoint Community College, where he taught anatomy and physiology, and as a former full-time faculty member in the massage therapy program at Centura College, where he mentored aspiring therapists.
