Screening for Medical Conditions and Adverse Drug Reactions

About the Course:
The purpose of this course is to train physical and occupational therapists and physical and occupational therapy assistants (referred to collectively in this course as therapists) in how to identify clusters of clinical findings that suggest an adverse drug reaction or the presence of serious medical pathology beyond the scope of practice for a therapist, regardless of the practice setting. This course is designed for therapists with limited background or training in screening techniques who are interested in learning how to screen patients for serious medical pathology and adverse drug reactions. 

Learning Outcomes:
  • Compare traditional and contemporary terminologies for differential diagnosis. 
  • Discuss components of the initial evaluation in screening patients for medical conditions. 
  • Identify the components of a review of physiological systems, including general and specific health questions. 
  • Describe the key concepts in screening patients for cancer, including identifying risk factors. 
  • Describe the most common prescription and over-the-counter medications and associated adverse drug reactions. 
About the Author: 
Bradley W. Stockert, PT, PhD, is a professor of physical therapy at California State University, Sacramento, where he received the Teacher of the Year Award in 2006. He obtained his master’s degree in physical therapy from Stanford University and his doctoral degree in physiology from the University of California, Davis. Dr. Stockert has been teaching in physical therapist professional education programs for 30 years. During that time he also taught in professional pharmacy and nursing programs. He currently teaches courses in the areas of pathology, differential diagnosis, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, and acute care physical therapy. Dr. Stockert has given numerous presentations on pathology and screening for medical conditions, adverse drug reactions, and cancer at state, national, and international conferences. Dr. Stockert is actively involved in incorporating the use of programmable patient simulators to train students for practice in acute care settings as well as how to recognize and respond to medical emergencies.
