About the Course

This course is intended for therapy professionals who treat patients with several levels of pain. The course starts by exploring the process of pain sensation, processing and perception. Several neuroanatomical pathways that convey pain sensation to the brain will be examined. The course also explores approaches and methods to pain management and therapy. 

Learning Outcomes

Upon the completion of this course, the learner will be able to: 

  • Differentiate physical and behavioral symptoms and characteristics of pain. 
  • Analyze how pain is transmitted to the brain and interpreted. 
  • Classify the neuroanatomical pathways of pain. 
  • Differentiate factors that can influence pain. 
  • Categorize the principles of pain education and basic treatments to improve functional and occupational performance. 

About the Author/Presenter

Maha Ahmad teaches anatomy and neuroscience courses to dental and dental hygiene graduate students. She has received several teaching awards. Dr. Ahmad has many research interests including educational research, head and neck anatomy, and salivary research. She received her Ph.D. in 2005 in anatomy and cell biology from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She joined the University of Detroit Mercy-School of Dentistry in 2012.
