Understanding Patellofemoral Disorders and Appropriate Rehabilitation Techniques
Course Overview
Disorders of the patellofemoral joint are a frequent cause of anterior knee pain, and they can be difficult to diagnose and treat. This course provides healthcare professionals with the tools to improve outcomes for patients with these disorders. The course reviews normal and pathological anatomy and biomechanics of the patellofemoral joint, discusses how to complete a comprehensive evaluation for patients with potential patellofemoral disorders, provides a brief overview of current surgical interventions, and presents evidence-based treatment choices for this patient population.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Distinguish important anatomical features of the patellofemoral joint and surrounding areas
- Classify different types of patellofemoral pathomechanics and describe how they may present in patients
- Relate the attributes of patellofemoral pain syndrome, instability, chondral injuries, and osteoarthritis and differentiate between these diagnoses and other causes of anterior knee symptoms
- Outline the components of a comprehensive evaluation for patients presenting with potential patellofemoral dysfunction
- Analyze the chief elements of conservative management of patellofemoral disorders
- Assess the most common surgical techniques for patients with patellofemoral disorders; recall when surgical intervention may be recommended
- Analyze evidence-based intervention approaches for patellofemoral disorders and apply them in specific case scenarios
