PTA Certification-to-Licensure Conversion
Kentucky House Bill 48 (2026) converts physical therapist assistants from a certification system to a licensure system and authorizes the Board to establish fees, conduct examinations, investigate violations, and adopt administrative regulations to implement the change, effective July 15, 2026. The bill does not currently establish a new continuing education requirement for the new PTA license — base renewal remains biennial (odd-numbered years, by March 31) for both PT and PTA. Elite will update this page if the Board adopts a continued-competency requirement.

Renewal CE Requirements

Category 1 / Category 2 Breakdown
Category 1 courses are 3+ hours and approved by APTA, KPTA, FSBPT, or any physical therapy board; Category 2 courses are 3 hours or less and unapproved. Physical therapists must complete at least 18 hours of Category 1 courses, with up to 10 hours allowed from Category 2. Physical therapist assistants must complete at least 10 hours of Category 1 courses, with up to 8 hours allowed from Category 2.
