One-Time Requirements
Professional Boundaries Training
Effective January 1, 2025, Alabama licensees must complete a Board-designated course on professional boundaries, one time, with a completion deadline of December 31, 2025.
Note: This course is provided directly by the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners.
Practice-Based or Conditional Requirements
Controlled Substances CE (ACSC Holders)
DOs who hold an Alabama Controlled Substances Certificate must complete 2 hours of Category 1 CME in controlled substances prescribing every 2 years.
Course option: Responsible and Effective Opioid Prescribing
Collaborative Practice Training
DOs in a collaborative practice agreement with a CRNP or CNM must complete CE on the rules and statutes governing collaborative practice in Alabama, within 12 months of starting the collaborative practice and every 48 months thereafter.
Federal Requirements
DEA MATE Act Requirement
DEA-registered practitioners, except those who are solely veterinarians, must complete an 8-hour training on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. This applies one time to DEA registrations or renewals submitted on or after June 27, 2023.
