Here's what you need to renew your California Physician license

NEW! DEA MATE ACT:
Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required to complete 8 hours of one-time training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.

Mandatory Subjects:1 time requirement of 12 hours pain management and end of life care; if >20% of patients are over 65, 20 hours of Geriatric medicine require. Curriculum to include cultural competency and linguistic competency.

Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required to complete 8 hours of one-time training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.

Mandatory Subjects:A one-time requirement of 12 hours in pain management and the treatment of terminally ill and dying patients. Effective January 1, 2019, pain management course must also include the risks of addiction associated with Schedule II controlled substances.
 General internists and family physicians who have a patient population of which over 25 percent of the patients are at least 65 years of age, are to complete at least 20 percent of their mandatory CME in the field of geriatric medicine.
 Physicians who hold a Radiology Supervisor and Operator Certificate, or a Radiography or Dermatology Supervisor and Operator Permit, are required 10 hours regarding the application of x-ray to the human body to renew their certification or permit.
 Fluoroscopy Supervisors and Operators are required 10 hours regarding the application of x-ray to the human body, 4 of which must be in radiation safety for the clinical use of Fluoroscopy.

Mandatory Subjects:
Completion of 50 hours of approved Category 1 (preapproved) medical education or Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
 
 If a physician assistant is certified by the NCCPA at the time of license renewal, evidence of certification must be retained for four (4) years after such certification is issued.
 
 Licensees authorized to prescribe controlled substances have a one-time requirement of 6 hours of controlled substance education that includes 3 hours specific to Schedule II substances. Effective January 1, 2019, controlled substance education must include the risks of addiction associated with the use of Schedule II controlled substances.
 
 Effective January 1, 2020, physician assistants who hold a fluoroscopy permit are required 10 hours regarding the application of x-ray to the human body, 4 of which must be in radiation safety for the clinical use of Fluoroscopy.
