Course Objective

This is an advanced level course designed towards healthcare professionals that can benefit from a deeper background into lung cancer, the effects, and treatments. This course reviews the etiology of lung cancer along with the statistics on mortality, survival, and the breakdown between the various types of lung cancer.  Along with this information, the learner will be introduced to current therapies and treatment regimens that are up to date with current practices.

Learning Outcomes   
Completion of this course will better enable the course participant to: 

  • Describe the epidemiological trends for lung cancer in the United States and identify risk factors associated with lung cancer development.
  • Describe the development and clinical manifestations and components of diagnostic evaluation for lung cancer.
  • Discuss the current treatment options for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and management strategies to alleviate the common symptoms of lung cancer.
  • Identify measures to provide psychosocial support to the patient and family and promote lung cancer prevention. 
     

About the Author/Presenter

Heather O’Connell, MSM, RRT, ACCS, CPFT, has been a respiratory therapist for 17 years. She has worked in many different areas of the field, such as critical care, pulmonary function and bronchoscopy, and labor and delivery. Heather earned her associate in science from Edison State College, her bachelor’s in cardiopulmonary sciences from the University of Central Florida, and her master’s in healthcare administration from Southern New Hampshire University. She worked as a clinical preceptor from 2010 until 2015, when she became a full-time director of clinical education for respiratory care at Florida Southwestern State College. She has taught various classes such as Assessment, Mechanical Ventilation, and Therapeutics.
