Renewal CE Requirements

Osteopathic Physicians
Florida DOs must complete 40 general hours every renewal period, including a minimum of 20 hours of AOA Category 1-A. No more than 8 hours may be AMA PRA Category 1 home study.

Mandatory CE Topics

Laws and Rules/Professional and Medical Ethics
DOs must complete 1 hour on Florida Laws and Rules/Professional and Medical Ethics (live interaction only) every renewal period.

Prevention of Medical Errors
DOs must complete 2 hours on prevention of medical errors (live interaction only) every renewal period.

Domestic Violence
DOs must complete 2 hours on domestic violence once every third biennium (distance learning/home study permitted).

One-Time Requirements

HIV/AIDS Training
DOs must complete 1 hour on HIV/AIDS (home study), one time.

Practice-Based or Conditional Requirements

Controlled Substance Prescribing
DOs registered with the DEA and authorized to prescribe controlled substances must complete 2 hours on controlled substance prescribing every renewal period (included within the 40 general hours). Effective July 1, 2026, this course must also address the treatment of pain for patients with sickle cell disease. Elite Learning has been an approved Florida CE provider for this course since October 2018.

Medical Marijuana/Low-THC Cannabis Ordering
DOs (and allopathic MDs) who order medical marijuana or low-THC cannabis must complete a 2-hour course and exam offered by the Florida Medical Association or Florida Osteopathic Medical Association every renewal period.

Note: This course is offered directly by the Florida Medical/Osteopathic Medical Association.

Federal Requirements

DEA MATE Act Requirement
DEA-registered practitioners, except those who are solely veterinarians, must complete an 8-hour training on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. This applies one time to DEA registrations or renewals submitted on or after June 27, 2023.

Medical Error Prevention
Florida MDs must complete 2 hours on medical error prevention every renewal period, covering the most commonly misdiagnosed condition categories designated by rule (oncology, gastroenterology, cardiology, infectious disease, and neurology related conditions).

Domestic Violence
MDs must complete 2 hours on domestic violence once every third biennium (approximately every 6 years).

One-Time Requirements

First-Renewal Requirement
MDs renewing their license for the first time are exempt from the general CME requirement and need only complete 2 hours on medical errors and 1 hour on HIV/AIDS, one time.

Emergency and pediatric emergency physicians certified to work at a trauma center must complete 5 hours of trauma-related CME every year (2 hours must address pediatric trauma if the physician treats pediatric trauma patients).
