One-Time Requirements

Initial Licensure Orientation
Louisiana MDs and DOs must attend a Board-sponsored orientation program as part of their initial license renewal, one time.

Practice-Based or Conditional Requirements

Nutrition and Metabolic Health CE
Physicians and PAs practicing family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, or gynecology must complete 1 hour of CME on nutrition and metabolic health every 4 years.

Controlled Dangerous Substances (CDS) License Holders
Effective January 1, 2018, holders of a CDS license to prescribe must complete 3 hours, one time, covering best practices for prescribing controlled dangerous substances, drug diversion training, appropriate treatment for addiction, and (for physicians) the treatment of chronic pain.

Sickle Cell Disease Treatment (Emergency Medicine)
Physicians and PAs practicing emergency medicine must complete an initial 1-hour CE course on the treatment of sickle cell disease, followed by a 1-hour refresher course no less frequently than every 3 years.

DEA-registered practitioners, except those who are solely veterinarians, must complete an 8-hour training on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. This applies one time to DEA registrations or renewals submitted on or after June 27, 2023.
