Renewal CE Requirements

Osteopathic Physicians
Maine DOs must complete 100 hours every renewal period, including a minimum of 40 hours of AOA Category 1-A or 1-B.

Opioid Prescribing
Maine licensees must complete 3 hours of Category 1 CME on the prescribing of opioid medication every renewal period. This applies to all licensees, not only prescribers.

Medical Marijuana Certification
Before providing a written certification for the medical use of marijuana for the first time, a medical provider must complete a 1-hour CME course on medical marijuana within the preceding 2 years.

AI Use in Therapy and Mental Health Services
Maine law prohibits offering therapy or psychotherapy services, including via internet-based AI, to the public unless provided by a licensed professional. Licensed professionals who use AI for supplementary support involving recorded or transcribed sessions must obtain written client consent; AI may not make independent therapeutic decisions or interact directly with clients in therapeutic communication.

Maine PAs and OPAs must complete 100 hours every renewal period, including a minimum of 50 hours of Category 1, or may substitute current NCCPA certification. Three hours of Category 1 opioid-prescribing CME are required every renewal regardless of whether NCCPA certification is used for the general hour requirement.
