Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required to complete 8 hours of one-time training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.
Mandatory Subjects:
A minimum of 3 hours of continuing education earned in the area of pain and symptom management. At least 1 of the 3 hours must include controlled substance prescribing.
A minimum of 1 hour of continuing education earned in the area of medical ethics.
Beginning December 20, 2021, completion of a one-time training to identify victims of human trafficking is required for a licensed physician or licensure applicant that meets the standards of Administrative Rule 338.120
Effective September 1, 2019, an individual seeking a controlled substance license or who is licensed to prescribe or dispense controlled substances must have completed a 1-time training in opioids and controlled substances awareness that meets the standards established in the Board of Pharmacy Controlled Substances Administrative Rules, R 338.3135 prior to being issued a license.
Beginning June 1, 2022, an applicant for licensure or registration must have completed a minimum of 2 hours of implicit bias training within the 5 years immediately preceding issuance of the license or registration. Additionally, beginning on June 1, 2022, and for every renewal thereafter, an applicant for license or registration renewal must have completed a minimum of 1 hour of implicit bias training for each year of the applicant's license or registration cycle. This course needs to be completed in a live classroom or an interactive online course.

MDs are required 150 hours every three years, 1 hour of which must be in the area of medical ethics, and a minimum of 3 hours of which must be in the area of pain and symptom management. At least 1 of the 3 required hours in pain and symptom management must include controlled substances prescribing.
DOs are required 150 hours every three years, 1 hour of which must be in the area of medical ethics, and a minimum of 3 hours of which must be in the area of pain and symptom management. At least 1 of the 3 required hours in pain and symptom management must include controlled substances prescribing. A maximum 110 hours may be AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.
NEW Beginning June 1, 2022, an applicant for licensure or registration must have completed a minimum of two (2) hours of implicit bias training within the 5 years immediately preceding issuance of the license or registration. For every renewal thereafter, in addition to completing any continuing education required for renewal, reregistration, or relicensure, an applicant must have completed a minimum of one (1) hour of implicit bias training for each year of the applicant's license or registration cycle. If otherwise permitted by the code and rules, this training may be used to satisfy other training or continuing education requirements. Instruction must be synchronous/interactive or asynchronous teleconference or webinar. (Per MI R 338.7004 eff 3/23/2023)
MDs and DOs have a one-time requirement of training in identifying victims of human trafficking. Licensees renewing in 2017 must complete training by 2020 renewal; licensees renewing in 2018 must complete by 2021 renewal; and, licensees renewing in 2019 must complete by 2022 renewal. Beginning in 2021, completion of the training is a requirement for initial licensure.
Beginning September 1, 2019, physicians seeking a controlled substance license, or who are licensed to prescribe or dispense controlled substances, must complete a one-time training in opioids and controlled substance awareness prior to being issued a controlled substance license.
Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required 8 hours on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, including the appropriate clinical use of all FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of a substance use disorder, one-time only.
Medical Directors of a Substance Use Disorder Service Program branch or mobile facility are required 30 hours of ACCME-approved continuing education, every three years. There is an initial requirement of 30 hours in addiction psychiatry or addiction medicine.

Opioids and Controlled Substance Awareness Training - Beginning with the 2021 renewal cycles and all renewal cycles thereafter, controlled substance licensees or individuals who are licensed to prescribe or dispense controlled substances must certify on their renewal application that prior to renewing their license they have completed a 1-time training in opioids and controlled substance awareness that meets the standards established in Administrative Rule 338.3135
