Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required to complete 8 hours of one-time training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.
Mandatory Subjects:
All physician assistants authorized to prescribe controlled substances must show proof of completing 100 hours of CME each cycle, 50 hours of which must be Category 1, as defined by the ACCME, AAPA, AMA, or AOA, and 5 hours of which must be related to the prescribing of medications with an emphasis on controlled substances.
New Physician Assistant licensees must obtain at least 10 hours of Category 1 AMA, AOA, or AAPA CME in the area of Prescribing Controlled Substances, to be produced along with their Controlled Substance Prescriptive Authority application. MAPA offers coursework which satisfies this requirement. Additionally, any CME that meets the aforementioned requirements will count as well.
