Here's what you need to renew your Rhode Island Physician license

NEW! DEA MATE ACT:
Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required to complete 8 hours of one-time training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.

Mandatory Subjects:
At least 4 hours of continuing medical education shall be earned on topics of current concern as determined by the director of the Rhode Island Department of Health. Current topics include: Cultural Awareness, Risk Management, Antimicrobial Stewardship.
 
Effective August 1, 2019, every physician has to complete one hour (per career) of CME training regarding Alzheimer’s disease.

Effective January 2,2020, licensees who prescribe Schedule II opioids have a one-time requirement of 8 hours of Category I CME in any or all of the following topics:
 
The appropriate prescribing of opioids for pain;
Pharmacology;
Adverse events;
Potential for dependence;
Tolerance;
Substance use disorder; and
Alternatives to opioids for pain management.
