One-Time Requirements
Cognitive Impairments (Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia)
Rhode Island MDs and DOs must complete 1 hour on the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients with cognitive impairments, including Alzheimer's disease and dementia, one time per career.

Practice-Based or Conditional Requirements
Schedule II Opioid Prescribers
Schedule II opioid prescribers must complete 8 hours of Category 1 CME, one time, covering appropriate opioid prescribing for pain, pharmacology, adverse events, dependence, tolerance, substance use disorder, and alternatives to opioids. This must be completed before renewal of the controlled substance registration (granted for 2-year periods) or within 2 years, whichever is longer.

Long-Acting and Extended-Release Opioid Prescribers
Prescribers of long-acting and extended-release opioids must complete an educational program compliant with the FDA's Extended Release/Long-Acting Opioid Analgesic Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) education requirements.
Fluoroscopic X-Ray Operators/Supervisors
Certified staff who operate or supervise fluoroscopic X-ray systems must complete 2 hours in fluoroscopic radiation safety and patient dose management every 2 years.

Medical Marijuana Program Registrants
Physicians providing written certifications for medical marijuana must complete 3 hours of Category 1 CME on medical marijuana every 2 years (included in total CME required for renewal).

Federal Requirements
DEA MATE Act Requirement
DEA-registered practitioners, except those who are solely veterinarians, must complete an 8-hour training on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. This applies one time to DEA registrations or renewals submitted on or after June 27, 2023.
