Mandatory CE Topics

Controlled Substances Prescribing and Monitoring
South Carolina MDs and DOs must complete 2 hours related to approved procedures for prescribing and monitoring controlled substances every renewal period. This is required whether or not the physician actually prescribes controlled substances.

Course option: Responsible and Effective Opioid Prescribing

Human Trafficking Awareness and Prevention
Physicians practicing emergency medicine, primary care, internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, or as a hospitalist (and those in public health clinics, emergency departments, urgent care centers, or community-based centers) must complete 1 hour of human trafficking awareness and prevention CE every 6 years. Currently licensed physicians must complete this by January 1, 2028; newly licensed physicians must complete it within 2 years of initial licensure.

DEA-registered practitioners, except those who are solely veterinarians, must complete an 8-hour training on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. This applies one time to DEA registrations or renewals submitted on or after June 27, 2023.
