One-Time Nutrition CE (Effective 2028)
Beginning January 1, 2028, Tennessee MDs and DOs will be required to complete 1 hour of nutrition-related CE, one time only. The qualifying course must be offered free of charge to the physician. This requirement sunsets January 1, 2033.

Mandatory CE Topics

Controlled Substances Prescribing (TN Chronic Pain Guidelines)
Tennessee licensees must complete 2 hours in prescribing controlled substances, including the Tennessee Chronic Pain Guidelines, every renewal period. Licensees practicing at registered pain management clinics, or who are board certified in pain management, anesthesiology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, or rheumatology, are exempt.

Course option: Prescription Opioids and Pain Management: The Tennessee Guidelines

DEA-registered practitioners, except those who are solely veterinarians, must complete an 8-hour training on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. This applies one time to DEA registrations or renewals submitted on or after June 27, 2023.
