Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required to complete 8 hours of one-time training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.
Mandatory Subjects:
At least two (2) of the forty (40) required hours shall be a course(s) designated specifically to address prescribing practices. The course(s) should include, but not be limited to, instruction on controlled substance prescribing practices.

Mandatory Subjects:
All licensees holding a current Tennessee medical license must have documentation of a minimum of (2) contact hours of continuing education designed specifically to address controlled substance prescribing practices. The continuing education must include instruction in the Tennessee Department of Health’s treatment guidelines on opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates and carisoprodol, and may include such other topics as medication addiction or risk management tools.

Mandatory Subjects:
The division of hours between Category I and Category II continuing medical education must be consistent with the requirements of the N.C.C.P.A
All licensees, regardless of whether they possess a DEA registration, must complete at least two hours of continuing medical education related to controlled substance prescribing, which must include instruction in the Department’s treatment guidelines (i.e., Tennessee Chronic Pain Guidelines) on opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and carisoprodol and may include topics such as medicine addiction, risk management tools, and other topics approved by the Committee.
