Ethics or Professional Responsibility
Texas licensees must complete at least 2 hours of formal Category 1 CME every renewal period in medical ethics and/or professional responsibility (for example, risk management, domestic abuse, or child abuse).

Pain Management and Safe Opioid Prescribing
Effective September 1, 2020, licensees must complete 2 hours of formal Category 1 CME every renewal period covering pain management best practices and alternatives, and safe/effective opioid and controlled substance prescribing (standards of care, identifying drug-seeking behavior, and patient communication).

One-Time Requirements
Human Trafficking Identification
Effective September 1, 2023, physicians who provide direct patient care must complete at least 1 hour on identifying and assisting trafficked persons in the first renewal period following their initial registration permit, one time (with a repeat hour required every third renewal period if the Board approves more than one qualifying course).

Life of the Mother Act (Obstetric Care Physicians)
Physicians who provide obstetric care must complete a Texas Medical Board-approved, 1-hour course on pregnancy-related medical emergencies, one time, before initial licensure or before their first license renewal after January 1, 2026. The course is available at no cost via the MyTMB portal.
Practice-Based or Conditional Requirements
Forensic Examiners of Sexual Assault Survivors
Physicians who perform forensic examinations on sexual assault survivors must complete a course designated as AMA Category 1, AOA Category 1-A (for DOs), or approved by the Texas Board of Nursing.

Pain Management Clinic Licensees
Licensed personnel who provide medical services at a pain management clinic must complete 10 hours in pain management every year.

Federal Requirements
DEA MATE Act Requirement
DEA-registered practitioners, except those who are solely veterinarians, must complete an 8-hour training on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. This applies one time to DEA registrations or renewals submitted on or after June 27, 2023.
