Practice-Based or Conditional Requirements

Controlled Substances Prescribing
Wisconsin MDs and DOs who hold an active DEA registration to prescribe controlled substances must complete 2 hours on prescribing opioids and other controlled substances every renewal period. Effective October 1, 2023, courses no longer require Board pre-approval.

Course option: Responsible and Effective Opioid Prescribing

DEA MATE Act Requirement
DEA-registered practitioners, except those who are solely veterinarians, must complete an 8-hour training on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. This applies one time to DEA registrations or renewals submitted on or after June 27, 2023.

Renewal CE Requirements

Physician Assistants
Effective August 1, 2023, Wisconsin PAs must complete 30 hours of Category 1 CME every renewal period, or maintain evidence of active NCCPA certification (or certification from a Board-approved successor organization).
