About the Course
The Occupational Therapy Practice Framework-4th edition (AOTA, 2020b) provides practitioners with language and terminology that describes the domain and process of occupational therapy provided to clients, which can include persons, groups, or populations. Using the language endorsed by the AOTA strengthens documentation and enables others, outside of occupational therapy practice, to better understand the role of occupational therapy. However, it can be argued that most seasoned practitioners have not had formal training in using the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework language and might have been trained under previous versions such as Uniform Terminology or might not be familiar with the most recent (4th Edition) published by AOTA (2020b). This basic-level course will provide an introduction to this language and foster its use for effective clinical documentation in a variety of occupational therapy practice settings. Upon completing this course, occupational therapy practitioners will be able to describe and use effective language and strategies for documentation of occupational therapy and be prepared to explain and use more effective and efficient documentation in many areas of practice.
Learning Objectives
- Describe effective strategies for occupational therapy documentation
- Define the occupational therapy practitioner’s ethical and legal responsibility in the context of documentation
- Identify the types of language used in occupational therapy documentation
- Differentiate among the various categories of documentation used in practice
- Identify the documentation used in different occupational therapy practice settings

About the Course:
The purpose of this basic-level course is to provide occupational therapy personnel with an introduction to the study of ethical behavior and action as it is applied to occupational therapy practice, education, and research. The course is designed to facilitate learning and application of the ethical principles required to foster moral reasoning and practice the standards of conduct required for ethical decision-making in occupational therapy. To meet these ends, the course defines terms used in discussing ethics, describes the principles and values of ethics organized into the Code, discusses the standards of conduct, relates occupational therapy ethics to stakeholders in society, explains a decision-making process for analyzing ethics issues, and presents sample case studies. Human Trafficking Overview for Healthcare Professionals, 2nd Edition
About the Course
Human trafficking is a global public health and human rights issue involving the exploitation of millions of people. Despite a high frequency of contact with trafficked individuals, there is a documented lack of education available to healthcare providers on the signs of human trafficking as well as a lack of protocols on how to care for trafficked individuals. This basic, introductory level course for healthcare professionals is an introduction to the complex crime of human trafficking, with a focus on sex and labor trafficking and the common symptoms and conditions that occur in trafficked persons. The course provides insights into the facts surrounding human trafficking and relevant health risks for the trafficked person. The course prepares healthcare professionals to become advocates for trafficked persons. Care of these individuals is as unique as the trafficked persons themselves, but research on the needs and common patterns of symptoms makes it possible to outline recommendations for the prevention of human trafficking and identification and care of this vulnerable population. Healthcare professionals who complete this course will be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of trafficked persons and identify the interventions needed to care for these individuals. Additionally, this course lists national resources that provide vital services to trafficked persons and makes recommendations for patient and staff safety when addressing these potentially volatile scenarios.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Describe human trafficking, including the types of trafficking and those populations most vulnerable to trafficking.
- Identify potentially trafficked persons using clinical signs and screening tools.
- Describe components and implementation of trauma-informed care.
- Review appropriate national organizations and local resources when intervening in human trafficking cases.

This course, designed to provide the healthcare practitioner with a broad overview of the assessment and provision of wheelchair seating, is written at a basic to intermediate-level for the occupational and physical therapist who have little or no experience in this specialty practice area. Many people require the use of a wheelchair for dependent or independent mobility, and each wheelchair provides some form of seating. Wheelchair seating directly affects a client’s position, which in turn affects function for all of that person’s daily tasks. It is essential that occupational therapy practitioners be able to competently participate as members of the interprofessional team in determining the optimal seating and wheeled mobility interventions for a particular client. Common diagnoses for a client using a wheelchair include cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, and muscular dystrophies.
Learning Outcomes:
After completing this course, the learner will be able to:
- Describe the steps in a seating assessment.
- Identify categories of seating systems.
- Describe the clinical considerations in selecting seating systems. 4. Summarize common positioning challenges and strategies for seated mobility.
- Compare and contrast effective applications to maximize seated mobility

Multidimensional Functional Assessment of the Older Adult, 2nd edition
About the Course
The purpose of this basic-level course is to enable occupational therapy practitioners and other rehabilitation professionals to understand and assess functional performance in older adults using a multidimensional approach. This is an introductory course for practitioners who are new to this population or who desire a refresher on the most current evidence related to the functional assessment of older adults. Client factors (including physical, cognitive, and psychosocial) and their impact on performance skills will be reviewed. Using a “top-down” approach that looks broadly at the activities in which older adults engage, this course describes the most current evidence on health changes in aging from the perspective of their impact on performance in various areas of occupation, such as activities of daily living (ADLs), instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), health management, work/leisure, and social participation. In addition, participants will learn how contextual factors and the environment influence occupational performance. Information in this course will allow occupational therapy practitioners who work with older adults to maximize their efficiency and success in service delivery through a more evidence-based, functional approach to care.
Learning Outcomes
- Describe current demographics and current definitions of health, well-being, disability, and preclinical disability for older adults.
- Define typical occupations of older adults.
- Compare the benefits of various approaches to assessment in evaluating functional performance in older adults.
- Recognize how age-related changes in client factors can influence functional performance in older adults.
- Differentiate between contextual and environmental factors that have a potential impact on functional performance in older adults.
- List additional factors that may impact the assessment of functional performance in older adults, including chronic health conditions, reimbursement, and client readiness for change.

About the Course
Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a complex syndrome that may occur after exposure to one or more traumatic events. PTSD involves a characteristic set of symptoms that includes re-experiencing the traumatic event, avoiding stimuli associated with the traumatic event, having negative changes in mood or cognitions associated with or worsening after the traumatic event, and experiencing increased reactivity and arousal. With the high prevalence of trauma exposure within the U.S., health care professionals are providing care to many trauma-exposed patients who are at risk of developing PTSD, and who may not have the comfort level or skills needed to assess and intervene appropriately. It is essential for occupational therapy practitioners to be able to screen for the presence of traumatic experiences, as well as possible PTSD symptoms, in all encounters with clients and families so that referrals to treatment can be provided. This basic-level course provides an overview of PTSD for occupational therapy practitioners working in a variety of roles and settings. This course addresses basic information regarding PTSD, including DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, etiology, incidence, risk factors, interventions, and treatment methods. With distinct mental health training and education targeting occupational performance, occupational therapy practitioners are integral to the interdisciplinary team for those at risk for or diagnosed with PTSD and their families. Unique historical perspectives, assessment, and treatment practices specific to occupational therapy will also be presented.
Learning Outcomes
- Recognize the history, incidence, etiology, and risk factors for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
- Describe the key components of trauma informed care.
- Identify diagnostic criteria and occupational therapy assessment tools across all age groups for PTSD.
- Identify the major clinical signs and symptoms of PTSD, including differential diagnoses related to PTSD.
- Summarize occupational therapy intervention approaches for the amelioration of PTSD symptoms.
- Develop occupation-based treatment approaches and clinician self-care strategies.

Aging Process: What is Happening to the Body and What Does it Mean?
Course Overview
According to the CDC, the fastest growing age group in the United States is those 65 and older. In fact, by 2060 older adults will make up 25% of the population. All health care providers will be involved in the care of this population of patients at some point throughout their careers.
It is essential that healthcare providers have an understanding of the changes that occur to the major systems of the body with aging and how these changes impact overall function and safety in order to provide the most thorough, individualized, and comprehensive care for older adults.
This course discusses at an in-depth level the physiological changes that occur with aging, the modifiable factors that impact the effects of aging, and how these contribute to the function of older adults. Participants will gain knowledge in assessing what changes are normal with aging versus those that are not, intervention strategies, and in addressing risk factors when they are identified.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Break down 2 changes that occur to the vertebral column with aging.
- Analyze 2 contributing factors to decreased bone density that occurs in older adults.
- Characterize 2 changes that occur to the muscular system with aging.
- Analyze 2 functional implications of the changes that occur to the muscular system with aging.
- Classify 3 changes that occur in the cardiovascular systems with normal aging.
- Confirm 2 changes to the respiratory system with aging and explain how they impact the physical functioning of an older adult.
- Analyze one way in which the changes that occur with aging in the nervous system affect function.
- Classify 3 differences between normal cognitive aging changes and dementia.
- Characterize difference between cataracts, macular degeneration, and glaucoma.
- Analyze the differences between the 4 main types of incontinence.
- Break down at least 3 changes that occur with aging that result in older adults having an increased fall risk.

About the Course:
For clinicians involved with patients diagnosed with dysphagia utilize information revealed from the bedside evaluation and instrumental assessments to develop a therapy plan, determine the highest appropriate diet and mealtime strategies/precautions to be implemented to keep the individual safe. In making these determinations, the role of dentition and oral care is critical. This seminar builds on our basis knowledge providing a more detailed understanding of the role of specific teeth in the mastication process. Bite force is different in individuals with natural teeth versus dentures versus the edentulous individual and impacts diet selection. Mouth care is critical for all residents; however, poor care contributes to increased risk of aspiration pneumonia from bacteria-laden saliva and may contribute to additional health issues especially for patients with diabetes and cancer. Free water protocols are dependent on consistent mouth care. Ill- fitting dentures may require denture adhesives to improve fit, but can be a challenge for mouth care. Protocols for mouth care will be addressed for natural teeth, dentures and the edentulous individual. Bite force, mastication skills and dentition status are key factors in selecting the appropriate diet level on the National Dysphagia Diet and the IDDSI. In addition, recommended mealtime strategies and precautions must be implemented by caregivers. These strategies and precautions should be part of the patients plan of care for improved safety at mealtime and are directly related to dentition status, diet selection and adequate mouth-care.
Course Objectives:
1. Identify the role of dentition and tooth loss on mastication
2. List protocol for mouth care
3. Identify an appropriate diet, mealtime strategies and precautions utilizing specific patient assessments

About the Course
This course focuses on a part of massage therapy that is frequently left out – the table stretches that are an integral part of rehabilitative and Swedish massage. Skilled stretching techniques re- educate muscles and restore healthy resting lengths, as well as add variety to a bodywork session. With proper body mechanics, stretching is easy on the therapist’s body and decreases strain on the hands. Stretching also adds an element of expansion into a bodywork session for both the therapist and the client. When we’re stretched we feel longer, wider, more alive. This course is a must for any therapist interested in helping their clients attain a more relaxed, injury-free state.
Learning Outcomes
- Recognize when a stretch would be indicated or contraindicated.
- Identify the role of stretching in massage therapy.
- Identify the anatomy and physiology of stretching.
