As part of working in the healthcare setting, many healthcare practitioners find themselves looking at chest x-rays with very minimal knowledge to be able to properly interpret well at bedside. This course is not intended to replace the interpretation process by a radiologist or medical physician. It is, however, to be used to assist the bedside practitioner with rapid bedside identification of potentially life-threatening events. In cases such as intubation, chest tube placement, tracheostomy tube placement, insertion of central venous pressure lines (CVP) or Swan-Ganz catheters, or if there is a rapid deterioration in the patient’s respiratory status, the respiratory therapist may be the healthcare practitioner that is initiating the request for the chest x-ray, or may be able to offer some insight at that time.
Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to:
- Identify normal anatomical structures within the chest.
- Apply a systematic approach to interpreting a chest x-ray.
- Distinguish between various abnormal chest x-rays using interpretation tools.
- Recognize the images to accompany disease processes such as pneumomediastinum, cavitating lesions, pleural effusions, and pneumothorax.
- Identify other artifacts that may potentially be found on the chest x-ray.
