What do I need to renew my LPN license in Illinois?
LPNs in Illinois must complete twenty (20) hours of approved CE every two years. The next upcoming renewal date for LPNs in Illinois is January 31, 2025.
NEW requirement beginning with renewals on or after January 1, 2025:
- One (1) hour in Cultural Competency.
- One (1) hour of Implicit Bias training as part of the 20 hours of required CE.
- One (1) hour related to the Diagnosis, Treatment and Care of Alzheimer’s Disease. This is for licensees who provide health care services to and have direct patient interaction with adults 26 years of age and older. This course may count toward the regular CE requirements.
- One (1) hour of Sexual Harassment Prevention Training as part of the 20 hours of required CE.
- One (1) hour of Mandated Reporter Training, within 3 months of initial licensure and at least every 6 years thereafter. This course is provided by the Illinois Department of Children And Family Services.
What do I need to renew my RN license in Illinois?
RNs in Illinois must complete twenty (20) hours of approved CE every two years. The next upcoming renewal date for RNs in Illinois is May 31, 2026.
NEW REQUIREMENTS for 2024:
- Illinois RNs will be required to complete a one-hour course in implicit bias awareness training. This begins with the 2024 RN renewal.
- Beginning with the 2024 RN renewal, Illinois RNs who provide health care services to and have direct patient interaction with adults 26 years of age and older will be required to complete a one-hour course in diagnosis, treatment and care of Alzheimer’s disease, along with other dementia types. This course may count toward the regular CE requirements (Public Act 102-0399, 20 ILCS 2105/2105-365).
Additional requirement:
- All RNs must complete a one-hour CE course in sexual harassment training as part of the 20 hours of required CE.
What do I need to renew my APRN license in Illinois
APRNs in Illinois must complete eighty (80) hours of approved continuing education in the APRN’s specialty per 2-year license renewal cycle. Completion of the 80 hours shall satisfy the CE requirements for renewal of a registered professional nurse license. The next upcoming renewal date for APRNs in Illinois is May 31, 2026.
- APRNs may earn a minimum of fifty (50) hours of the continuing education in continuing education programs that shall include no less than twenty (20) hours of pharmacotherapeutics, including ten (10) hours of opioid prescribing or substance abuse education.
- APRNs may earn a maximum of 30 hours of credit by presentations in the APRN clinical specialty, evidence-based practice, or quality improvement projects, publications, research projects, or preceptor hours.
NEW! DEA MATE Act requirements for Illinois APRNs
Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) must complete 8 hours of one-time training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.
