World Hearing Day Set for March 3

Hearing day

Almost 500 million worldwide impacted by hearing difficulties

On March 3, 2019, World Hearing Day will mark a day to spread the word about the importance of hearing health and management.

With approximately 466 million people worldwide affected by some degree of hearing loss, there are no shortage of reasons to acknowledge this important day. Studies show that unaddressed hearing loss costs about $800 billion annually. In 2007, the World Health Organization (WHO) identified hearing loss as a focus for education, and developed this annual initiative to highlight this important health care concern.

This year’s theme is “Check Your Hearing!” which emphasizes the importance of early identification and intervention for hearing loss. “Audiologists play an important part in this initiative by creating awareness about the importance of identification and management of hearing loss as well as the highlighting the role of the audiologist on the hearing health-care team,” read a press release. “Teaming up with the WHO on World Hearing Day gives us a unique platform to highlight this important message to a worldwide audience.”
