About the Course 

This course provides healthcare professionals with a comprehensive understanding of elder abuse, including the types, prevalence, myths, and historical context. Learners will understand practical strategies for identifying and reporting abuse, and the multidisciplinary roles that advocate in cases of elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon the completion of this course, the learner will be able to: 

  • Articulate the various forms of elder abuse, including physical, emotional, financial, sexual abuse, and neglect. 
  • Identify the prevalence and demographic characteristics of elder abuse. 
  • Analyze the risk factors that contribute to elder abuse and the effects of elder abuse on the well-being, safety, and quality of life of older adults. 
  • Identify the signs and symptoms of elder abuse in different contexts, such as domestic and institutional settings. 
  • Summarize screening tools and various assessment methods for elder abuse. 
  • Integrate trauma-informed care principles into practice. 
  • Examine and summarize various theories related to the causes of elder abuse, including psychological, sociological, and economic factors. 
  • Analyze how cultural norms and values can impact the recognition and handling of elder abuse cases. 
  • Apply a multidisciplinary team approach in advocating elder abuse cases and incorporate knowledge and intervention models. 
  • Advocate for stronger policies, regulations, and community resources to prevent elder abuse, support affected individuals, and debunk myths about elder abuse.

About the Author/Presenter 

Abbie Schmitt, MSN-Ed, RN, is a nurse educator with nursing experience in internal medicine, inpatient rehab, cardiology, emergency medicine, humanitarian relief, and ADN nursing programs. She graduated with an associate degree in nursing (ADN) in 2007, a Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) in 2012, and a master’s degree in nursing—nursing education (MSN-Ed) from Liberty University in 2019.
