About the Course
This intermediate-level course is written for mental health professionals, including social workers, counselors, marriage and family therapists, and psychologists. Accurate assessment, differential diagnosis, and appropriate treatment planning are important clinical elements in a person’s recovery from OCD. Practitioners will learn about OCD, including symptoms and subtypes, differential diagnoses, causal and influential factors, presentation across the life span, treatment, and assessment. They will also learn how to formulate cases in order to deliver the appropriate interventions that will maximize the treatment outcome.  The course offers a thorough description of exposure and response prevention, an evidence-based OCD treatment strategy, along with other psychotherapeutic and biologically based treatment options, including family involvement and medication. 

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to: 

  • Define obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) etiology, diagnosis, and subtypes. 
  • Recount important psychosocial factors underlying OCD. 
  • Distinguish between OCD, obsessive compulsive spectrum, and related disorders. 
  • Differentiate OCD assessment tools and clinical considerations. 
  • Identify effective treatments and interventions for OCD, including family interventions and neurosurgical options. 
  • Relate relapse prevention and outcome evaluations with respect to OCD. 

About the Author/Presenter
Leslie J. Shapiro, MSW, LICSW, received her Master of Social Work degree in 1989 from Boston University and has been an instructor of cognitive and behavioral treatment at Boston University and a lecturer at Harvard Medical School. She was awarded a McLean Hospital career development grant, and her research and publications have focused on scrupulosity and pathological guilt among residential patients with OCD. Ms. Shapiro is the author of Understanding OCD: Skills to Control the Conscience and Outsmart Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: Elements, History, Treatments, and Research, and When Religion and Morals Become OCD: Understanding and Treating Scrupulosity. She currently practices as a behavioral therapist at the McLean Hospital Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Institute in Belmont, MA, where she provides cognitive behavioral therapy treatment for people with refractory obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and related disorders in residential, partial, and outpatient programs. Ms. Shapiro also maintains a private practice working with individuals presenting primarily with OCD and anxiety problems.
